Resources to Support Mathematics Instruction

The Virginia Department of Education, in conjunction with mathematics leaders and teachers, are in the process of developing resources to support educators with the instruction of the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning. These resources are intended to support mathematics instruction and to inform the development and review of Highly Qualified Instructional Materials (HQIM).  

  • Exemplar Mathematics Instructional Plans: These exemplar documents provide educators with examples of instruction aligned with the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning. These examples of how the knowledge, skills, and processes found in the SOLs can be presented to students in the classroom can guide the development and review of Highly Qualified Instructional Materials. For additional information regarding the exemplar Mathematics Instructional Plans, please review this video

  • Data Cycle Teacher Resources: At this time, the Data Cycle Teacher Resources have been removed to ensure formatting alignment and structural consistency with the Instructional Guides. Instructional Guides will be released mid-May.
  • Understanding the Standards- The Understanding the Standards documents amplify the standards and further define the content knowledge, skills, and understandings of the Standards of Learning. They provide background information about mathematical concepts and delineate in greater specificity the minimum content that all students should learn. Each Understanding the Standards document will support a grade level/course and is intended to support instruction for an academic year.  
    •  K - 5: Released February 9, 2024 (see below) 
    •  6 - EOC: Released February 29, 2024 (see below)
    • Upper-level Secondary Courses: Released March 26, 2024 (see below)
  • Mathematics Instructional Guides- The Mathematics Instructional Guides, a companion document to the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning, amplify the standards by defining the core knowledge and skills in practice, supporting teachers and their instruction, and serving to transition classroom instruction from the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning to the newly adopted Standards. Each grade level/course will have one VDOE Mathematics Instructional Guide.
