2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning

The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning  were approved by the Virginia Board of Education on August 31, 2023. The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning represent "best in class" standards and comprise the mathematics content that teachers in Virginia are expected to teach and students are expected to learn. The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning will be fully implemented during the 2024-2025 school year.

 Revision of the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning

The Code of Virginia requires a review of Virginia’s Standards of Learning every seven years. The 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning were adopted in 2016 and are scheduled for review in 2022-2023. 

Timeline for the Development and Revision of the Mathematics Standards of Learning

On June 15, 2023, the Virginia Board of Education accepted the proposed 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning on first review. An overview of revisions document, based on the June 2023 draft standards, was also presented to the Board of Education. An updated revision and implementation timeline, included in the Board of Education agenda item, is shown below.   

  • June 2023: Draft of the proposed 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning presented to the Board of Education for first review
  • July - August 2023: Public hearings held as prescribed by the Board of Education; Department of Education staff reviews statewide public comment and make edits, as necessary.
  • August/September 2023: Anticipated approval of the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning
  • 2024 - 2025 School Year: Full implementation of the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning

Public Hearings and Public Comment regarding the proposed Mathematics SOL 

The Board seeks comments to acquire quality feedback to help Virginia create best in class Standards for the children of the Commonwealth. Public comment regarding the proposed 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning may be offered through public hearings or the online public comment form through August 11, 2023.  

Public Hearings – In-Person 

Each in-person public hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. Registration of speakers will begin at 6:00 p.m. Speakers will have three minutes to speak and should bring copies of their comments for the Board of Education. The public hearings will be held at the following locations:

Public Hearings – Virtual 

Pre-registration will be required for virtual public hearings. Registrants will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the public hearing. Speakers will have three minutes to speak and are asked to submit copies of their comments electronically for the Board of Education. The virtual public hearings will be held on the following dates and times:

  • July 10, 2023 (M), 9:00AM
  • July 10, 2023 (M), 6:30PM
  • July 25, 2023 (Tu), 6:30PM
  • August 2, 2023 (W), 12:00PM
  • August 2, 2023 (W), 6:30PM
  • August 7, 2023 (M), 6:30PM

Public hearings, both in-person and virtual, are open to the public.
