Call for 2024 Mathematics Textbook and Instructional Materials Reviewers and Summer Symposium Presenters

The VDOE is seeking nominations for qualified individuals available to serve on committees to support the effective implementation of the 2024 English Standards of Learning and the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning during the summer of 2024. Participants may choose to apply to serve on a Textbook and Instructional Materials Review Committee or to a joint role on the Textbook and Instructional Materials Review Committee and as a presenter at the VDOE Regional Literacy and Mathematics Symposiums. Nominees should be teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, reading and mathematics specialists, or other educators who have expertise with the content area and current standards.

Individuals who wish to serve in either capacity must submit an application using the VDOE Mathematics Support Application by Friday, May 3, 2024. Committee members will be selected on the basis of expertise, experience, and balanced regional representation and notified by Friday, May 10, 2024.

Register to Attend the 2024 Literacy and Mathematics Summer Symposiums

The VDOE instructional team is excited to announce the Summer 2024 VDOE Literacy and Mathematics Symposiums in each Superintendent’s Region in Virginia.  The Literacy and Mathematics Symposiums utilize a train-the-trainer model of professional learning and will be the springboard for additional ongoing regional support for divisions.  Symposiums will be held from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. according to the listing below. 

  • Region 1: Reynolds Community College; August 5, 2024 
  • Region 2: Old Dominion University; August 8, 2024 
  • Region 3: Rappahannock Community College; August 7, 2024 
  • Region 4: George Mason University; June 27, 2024 
  • Region 5: James Madison University; June 24, 2024 
  • Region 6: New College Institute; June 20, 2024 
  • Region 7: Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center; June 17, 2024 
  • Region 8: Longwood University; June 10, 2024 

The VDOE Literacy and Mathematics Symposium will be composed of literacy and mathematics breakout sessions for grade level bands to include grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.  Materials for these sessions will be available to teachers and leaders after the Symposiums are completed. Additionally, virtual sessions focused on the transition from current standards to the 2024 English Standards of Learning and the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning will be provided in Fall 2024.  More information will be provided by the Literacy and Mathematics instructional teams. Instructional leads for English and Mathematics as designated in SSWS will be sent the link to register the division’s team. Division leaders should work collaboratively to determine participants and submit one registration per division.

2024 Mathematics Textbook and Instructional Materials Review Process

April 25, 2024 - At the April 25, 2024 Board of Education meeting, the revised timeline for the Mathematics Textbooks and Instructional Materials Review Process was presented to the Board of Education.

September 14, 2023 - The Virginia Board of Education adopted the 2024 Mathematics Textbook Review Process.

2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning

The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning were approved by the Virginia Board of Education on August 31, 2023. The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning represent "best in class" standards and comprise the mathematics content that teachers in Virginia are expected to teach and students are expected to learn. The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning will be fully implemented during the 2024-2025 school year.

  • Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching – The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.
  • William C. Lowry Math Educator of the Year – Each year the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics recognizes a classroom teacher on the elementary, middle, secondary, university, and mathematics specialist/coach level for his or her outstanding work and accomplishments in the teaching of mathematics.
