Fall Membership (Enrollment on September 30th)

VDOE annually collects statistics on the number of students enrolled in public school on September 30. This report, known as Fall Membership, is submitted by each school in Virginia that officially enrolls students.

Modes of Instruction and Attendance by Student Group

Student enrollment data disaggregated by students from low-income families, students from each racial and ethnic group, gender, English learners, children with disabilities, children experiencing homelessness, children in foster care, and migratory students for each mode of instruction.

School-Age Population Estimates for Sales Tax Distribution

The school age population is updated each July 1 and used for the distribution of sales tax revenue to local school divisions. Amendments in 2010 to Section 58.1-638 of the Code of Virginia replaced the triennial census conducted by school divisions with an annual estimate of the school-age (5 to 19 year olds) population from the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.

Special Education Child Count on Dec 1st

School divisions are required to report an unduplicated count of students with disabilities receiving special education on December 1 or the closest school day to December 1 for state funding and federal reporting under provisions the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B.

Homeschool and Religious Exemptions

School divisions report the number of students who have obtained an excuse from school attendance by reason of bona fide religious training or belief as well as the number of students whose parents have notified the division superintendent – by August 15 – of their intention to provide home instruction.

Private Schools

The Virginia Department of Education does not collect data on private school enrollment. Private school enrollment data reported to the U.S. Department of Education is available from the National Center for Education Statistics.
