RICHMOND — Six Virginia public schools and one private school are among the 297 schools named today as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors high-performing schools and schools making exemplary progress toward closing achievement gaps.

The six Virginia public schools recognized as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools are as follows:

  • Coles Elementary School, Prince William County
  • Mosaic Elementary School, Fairfax County
  • Nuckols Farm Elementary School, Henrico County
  • Old Donation School, Virginia Beach
  • Tabb Elementary School, York County
  • West Point Elementary School, West Point

“All of these schools made significant progress during the 2021-2022 school year in recovering lost learning — especially in mathematics and science,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow said. “Their principals and teachers promote a culture of excellence and high expectations for all students. I look forward to visiting each of these school communities and congratulating the students, educators and parents on this national recognition.”

The Virginia Department of Education nominated Mosaic Elementary, Nuckols Farm Elementary, Old Donation School, Tabb Elementary and West Point Elementary for overall high achievement on state assessments in reading and mathematics. The department nominated Coles Elementary based on the school’s progress toward closing achievement gaps.

Saint Agnes School, a parochial school in Arlington, also earned a 2022 Blue Ribbon Schools award.  The Council for American Private Education nominates private schools based on performance in reading and math as measured by nationally normed standardized tests.

Since its inception, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed approximately 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools. Photographs and brief descriptions of the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools are available on the U.S. Department of Education website.
